Battery Disposal Instructions
Many devices come with batteries or rechargeable batteries that are required for operation. In connection with the sale of these batteries or accumulators, we as distributors are obliged under the Battery Act (BattG) to inform our customers of the following: Old batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. Consumers are legally obliged to bring batteries to a suitable collection point. You can return batteries and rechargeable batteries here free of charge:
- at a public collection point
- where batteries and accumulators are sold
- by post to our shipping warehouse:
Old batteries contain valuable raw materials that can be recycled. Batteries and rechargeable batteries are marked with the symbol of a crossed-out garbage can.
The garbage can means: Batteries and rechargeable batteries are allowed Not in the household waste. The characters below the garbage cans stand for: Pb for lead; Cd for cadmium; Hg for mercury. These chemical symbols signal that a certain limit of the specified chemical substances is exceeded in this type of battery:
- HG: more than 0.0005 weight percent mercury
- Cd: more than 0.002% by weight cadmium
- Pb: more than 0.004% by weight lead.
You will also find this information in the documents accompanying the consignment or in the manufacturer's operating instructions.
Special information on the sale of vehicle batteries
The German battery law provides for the collection of a deposit of €7.50 including sales tax when selling vehicle batteries to end users. This is done unless a used old battery is returned in the same purchase process.
The deposit is not included in the purchase price and is listed and charged separately.
The end user must take back the old vehicle batteries free of charge. If a new purchase is not made at the same time, the deposit amount will be refunded.
OBI takes back and refunds deposits only in the OBI markets and for the vehicle battery types sold by OBI.
Alternatively, used vehicle batteries can also be handed in free of charge to municipal recycling centers for disposal. However, the deposit will not be refunded there.
Please note that vehicle batteries cannot be returned by post due to the dangerous goods ordinance.
